Moxibustion

A natural TCM therapy to restore balance, improve circulation and support body recovery through soothing, therapeutic heat.

Moxibustion is an external TCM therapy that involves burning a dried, ground herb called moxa (mugwort) near or directly on specific acupuncture points.

In TCM terms, the deeply penetrating thermal energy from moxa stimulates the Meridians, tonifies Yang energy, dispels internal cold and dampness and invigorates the flow of Qi and blood to promote deep healing.

Moxibustion is particularly beneficial for individuals with symptoms related to cold constitution, stagnation or deficiency including:

  • Fatigue or low energy, especially with sensations of coldness or weakness
  • Pain or stiffness aggravated by cold or damp weather
  • Digestive discomfort such as bloating, loose stools or cold sensations in the abdomen
  • Stress-related symptoms or sleep disturbances
  • Women’s health concerns; including menstrual discomfort, irregular cycles or cold-related patterns
  • Post-recovery support and wellness maintenance
  • Supports circulation and promotes smooth Qi flow through warming stimulation
  • Helps relieve discomfort and muscular tension
  • Supports Yang Qi and overall vitality
  • May assist sleep quality, digestion and metabolic function
  • Encourages relaxation and recovery
  • Consultation: A thorough 4 TCM diagnostic method including pulse and tongue diagnosis to assess your internal constitution
  • Assessment by practitioner: Selection of the precise acupuncture points that require warming therapy
  • Treatment process explanation: Clear explanation of the method used (e.g., indirect moxa sticks, moxa boxes or warming needles).
  • Duration: The treatment process typically lasts between 20–45 minutes
  • Sensation during treatment: You will experience a deeply soothing sensation of warmth, alongside mild soreness (if paired with acupuncture) and overall relaxation
  • Keep treated areas warm and avoid exposure to air conditioning
  • Maintain hydration with warm water

Please avoid

  • Cold beverages
  • Staying up late
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Cold showers for at least 4 hours after treatment

Possible temporary reactions

Is the treatment painful?
No. Moxibustion is generally comfortable and non-invasive. Heat intensity is monitored carefully throughout the session.

How many sessions are needed?
Treatment frequency depends on individual constitution and condition. For chronic cold-related or fatigue patients, weekly sessions over several weeks may be recommended.

Is it suitable for first-time TCM users?
Yes. Moxibustion is commonly chosen as a gentle and approachable introduction to TCM care.

Any side effects?
Temporary skin redness or warmth may occur due to increased circulation and may remain visible for approximately 3–10 days. A mild herbal scent from moxa smoke after treatment is also normal.
