Tuina is an external treatment rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Tuina mainly uses hands-on techniques. In certain situations, massage oil, essential oil or corn starch may be used to reduce friction and improve comfort during treatment. Special herbal medicated oils or herbal wine may also be applied to enhance the therapeutic effect.
Tuina uses various techniques such as pushing, grasping, pressing, kneading, rolling and joint mobilization to stimulate the meridians, acupoints, muscles and joints of the body. It helps to promote meridian circulation, regulate Qi and blood flow to support the functions of the internal organs. A common misconception is that stronger pressure and more pain mean better treatment results. In reality, discomfort during treatment usually indicates tension, blockage or imbalance in the affected area. Healthy tissues generally do not produce significant pain during Tuina. Most Tuina techniques are gentle, making it suitable not only for treatment but also for general wellness and improving sub-health conditions.
Although Tuina is only one branch of TCM and has its limitations, it is especially suitable for managing chronic conditions and long-term body qi imbalances. When combined with other TCM treatments such as acupuncture and herbal medicine, Tuina can be used for a wide range of conditions. TCM Tuina is different from ordinary relaxation massage. Besides muscle aches and pain conditions, Tuina may also help with chronic issues and suboptimal health conditions such as indigestion, fatigue and low immunity. Certain gynecological conditions such as menstrual pain and irregular menstruation, as well as some pediatric conditions, may also benefit from Tuina therapy. Pediatric Tuina is especially gentle and safe for children and is a useful option for infants and young children who may have difficulty taking medication.
